Employers have a duty to reduce workplace risk to the lowest reasonably practicable level by taking preventative measures.

Employers have a duty to reduce workplace risk to the lowest reasonably practicable level by taking preventative measures. Many businesses in the industrial sector, such as manufacturing facilities, factories, or warehouses will operate as part of a longer supply chain, where their contribution will be intrinsic to the delivery of the final product to the end customer.

The use of signs and graphics in these facilities can go a long way to help maximise workflow and keep operations running smoothly, discover five types of signage that will have an impact:

  1. Social Distancing
Where working from home is not possible, every reasonable effort should be made to comply with the social distancing guidelines set out (keeping people 2m apart wherever possible). This can be done by using floor graphics and stickers, or freestanding signs such as a-frames to communicate and remind employees.
  2. Handwashing
In every workplace, increasing the frequency of handwashing and surface cleaning. To reduce the risk to staff make sure you use signage to relay this message. This can be done by using hygiene signs in high-risk areas or setting up additional hand-wash stations where needed.
  3. 3. Health & Safety
A workplace’s workforce is its main asset, keeping your staff safe should be a top priority. Display up-to-date, clear, and well-maintained safety signage helps to protect staff and make them feel safe by providing information that tells them how to behave when in certain areas.
  4. Wayfinding
Wayfinding signage can also help keep your operation running smoothly, helping visitors, contractors, and suppliers find their way to you. If your local council is in agreement, you could use freestanding metal-framed signage or hoardings to indicate the approach to your site. When inside the facility use floor graphics or wall-mounted signs to direct employees and contractors safely.
  5. Production Boards / Screens
Communication of a project’s status is important in any industrial setting, project boards help to keep staff in the know at all times. These boards provide key information about which parts of a job have been completed, inform on what is yet to be done and deliver any additional information staff may require to finish the job to the customer's specification. Why not go digital by using screens around your facility to communicate key messages.
