Signage Reconfiguration and Totem Sign Graphics in Tunbridge Wells

The Challenge

Thames Motor Group required updates to their existing signage at their Tunbridge Wells site to better reflect branding and improve the overall appearance of the dealership.

The project involved relocating existing ACM panels, installing a new large-format ACM sign, and updating graphics on a 6-metre double-sided totem sign. All work needed to be carried out within a live dealership environment, requiring careful coordination to minimise disruption while maintaining safety.

One of the key challenges arose during the removal of an existing ACM panel. It became clear that the previous installation had used a strong adhesive, which left visible damage and residue on the building façade once removed. This meant the original plan to apply cut vinyl graphics directly to the wall was no longer viable.

In addition, working at height presented challenges across the project. A scaffold tower was required to access the main building signage at approximately 6 metres, while the totem sign graphics were installed using ladders as the required areas were positioned lower down. Wind conditions at height also impacted installation, making certain stages unsafe to complete and requiring the project to be spread over multiple visits.

The Solution

FASTSIGNS® Tunbridge Wells carried out a flexible and problem-solving-led installation to overcome the challenges on-site.

To address the damaged wall surface, the team adapted the original plan by installing a new ACM panel measuring 5m x 1.5m. This panel was first covered in silver vinyl to closely match the building’s existing finish, before applying the required graphics on top. This approach effectively concealed the surface damage while maintaining a clean and consistent appearance.

Existing ACM panels were carefully removed and relocated to another area of the building, ensuring they could be reused as part of the updated layout.

For the totem sign, we removed the existing graphics and applied new white cut vinyl graphics to both sides of the structure. The work was carried out using ladders, allowing safe and efficient access to the lower sections of the sign where the updates were required.

Although all cut vinyl graphics were initially supplied by the client, a small number of elements were missing during installation. To avoid delays, our team quickly sourced the required vector logos for major car brands and produced replacement graphics in-house, allowing the project to continue without disruption.

Due to weather conditions, particularly wind when working at height on the building signage, the installation was completed over multiple visits to ensure all work was carried out safely. The dealership team also supported the process by moving vehicles as needed to provide safe access for the scaffold tower.

The Result

The completed project delivers a clean, updated, and professional signage solution for Thames Motor Group in Tunbridge Wells.

By adapting to unexpected site conditions and maintaining flexibility throughout the installation, FASTSIGNS® Tunbridge Wells were able to successfully complete the project to a high standard.

The refreshed totem sign and repositioned ACM signage now provide clear and consistent branding across the site, helping the dealership maintain a strong visual presence while operating in a busy, customer-facing environment.

This project highlights the importance of experience and adaptability when delivering commercial signage installations, particularly in live environments where access, safety, and changing site conditions must all be carefully managed.
