The Challenge

Birmingham live and work premises: A youth homeless shelter, reached out to us with a unique need to enhance their premises visual appeal while maintaining the anonymity necessary for their operation. The primary challenge was to create striking graphics without using their actual branding. To achieve this, our client suggested Birmingham-themed designs which not only engage visitors but also provide privacy and comfort to those inside. Additionally, due to the dark paths surrounding the main door to the building, they wanted to be able to see out of the windows, whilst obscuring the view for anyone looking in. Furthermore, the large scale of outdoor installation posed logistical challenges that required precision and care.

The Solution

Recognizing the specific needs of our customer, we crafted a comprehensive visual solution tailored to their requirements. We began by designing and installing subtle interior wall graphics featuring the Birmingham skyline, creating a sense of belonging and pride among the visitors and residents without compromising their privacy.

Next, we installed a simple yet effective ACM sign outside the building to aid visitors in identifying the premises with ease, without any explicit branding.

The core of the project involved the large-scale use of outdoor window vinyls. We expertly combined specialist perforated vinyl, which allows natural light to enter and offers outward visibility, with normal vinyl to achieve a bolder visual statement. This specialist perforated window vinyl was the solution for the one-way vision requirement: the black adhesive on the reverse side stops the light bouncing, which means occupants can see out, whilst the printed outside reflects light, meaning no one can see in. These materials provided the necessary privacy while maintaining an inviting atmosphere for the shelter's inhabitants.

For an engaging and modern touch, we incorporated very large QR codes into the design. These QR codes direct passersby to our clients website and are strategically sized to be easily scanned by individuals walking by or traveling in traffic as it Is a high foot fall area and congestion on the road is common, this was a great opportunity to use the surrounding area as an advantage for their brand.

The Result

The collaborative effort between our team and our customers ideas resulted in a successful transformation of the premises. The project not only respected the confidentiality needs of the shelter but also enhanced its visual impact with Birmingham-themed graphics. The window vinyls achieved the perfect balance of privacy and aesthetics, making the shelter discreet yet approachable.
