Your signage budget doesn't have to be large to be effective. Some of the most useful signs a business can have – promotional banners, window graphics, temporary boards – cost relatively little to produce and can be up within days.
At FASTSIGNS Leeds, we've spent over 30 years helping businesses get the most from their signage spend. This guide covers the low-cost options that actually work, when they make sense and when it's worth investing in something more permanent.
What do we mean by "low-cost signs"?

Low-cost signage means effective, fit-for-purpose options built for maximum impact with a lower upfront cost. A vinyl banner won't last ten years outdoors, but it's not meant to. It's designed to look sharp, go up fast and come down when you're done.
These signs use lightweight materials like Correx or high-grade PVC vinyl, and they're simpler to produce and install than permanent structures. They're the right choice for temporary, promotional or short-term use.
If you need to be seen now but a full rebrand is twelve months away, entry-level signage keeps you visible and professional in the meantime.
Popular low-cost signage options
Vinyl and mesh banners
Banners are one of the lowest cost-per-square-metre options in professional signage. They work best in sheltered outdoor spots, storefronts and indoor events. Vinyl banners use solid PVC with a smooth surface for vibrant, high-resolution print. Mesh banners are perforated PVC – thousands of tiny holes let wind pass through, making them the choice for exposed locations like scaffolding, construction hoarding or large building wraps. In an exposed spot, solid vinyl acts like a sail. The mesh lets the air through.
Typical lifespan: Vinyl lasts 1–3 years outdoors, up to 5 in sheltered spots; mesh typically 2–3 years in exposed conditions.
Design banners without specific dates ("Summer Sale" rather than "Summer Sale 2026") and you can store and reuse them year after year. For events where dates change, we can leave a blank space and add removable vinyl lettering rather than reprinting the whole banner.

Window graphics and vinyl decals
Most businesses in Leeds are sitting on free advertising space and not using it. Your windows are already there, so you might as well put them to work.
Window graphics are self-adhesive vinyl film applied directly to glass. They work well for:
- High street retail: seasonal sales, new product launches or "coming soon" teasers
- Professional offices: balancing an open-plan feel with privacy for meeting rooms or glass partitions
- Hospitality venues: reinforcing brand identity and creating atmosphere before a customer steps through the door
Typical lifespan: Standard outdoor vinyl typically lasts 3–7 years, depending on UV exposure. Where graphics are applied to the inside of the glass rather than outside, they're sheltered from the elements and can last considerably longer.
Temporary rigid signs: Correx and Foamex
When you need something more structured than a banner but don't need it to last for years, temporary rigid signs are the answer.
Correx is a corrugated plastic, similar to cardboard in structure but fully waterproof. It's the lightest and cheapest rigid material available, ideal for temporary outdoor use: estate agent boards, directional signs at festivals, short-term site safety notices. Expect around 6–12 months outdoors; it's weather-resistant but can become brittle under prolonged UV.
Foamex is a compressed PVC foam board with a smooth, matte finish – a step up visually from Correx while remaining lightweight. It suits indoor displays, point-of-sale signage, exhibition panels and wall-mounted menu boards. Indoors it holds up well for 1–3 years.
Both are quick to produce, easy to install and often need nothing more than cable ties to fix in place.

Cardboard signs and paper posters
Walk around a museum or gallery these days and you'll spot more of these. Printed card and paper poster signs have been picking up in cultural venues, and the reasons translate well to other temporary displays too.
Cost is the obvious one. Print quality on card stock is much better than most people expect, and when the exhibition closes, they can be recycled. They're also light. For a touring display that moves between venues, it means you can easily pack everything up and take it with you. Done well, they don’t look cheap – and they have great sustainability benefits too.
Pull-up banners and portable displays
Pull-up banners, also known as roller banners, are a printed graphic in a spring-loaded metal base. Pull it up, secure the rear pole and you're done. No professional installation and no transport logistics beyond the boot of a car.
They're the standard for trade show stands and exhibition spaces, but work just as well in reception areas (welcome messages, award wins, QR codes for check-ins) and retail pop-ups, like independent traders or market vendors promoting a specific offer.
When low-cost signage makes sense – and when it doesn't

The most expensive sign you can buy is one that doesn't do its job. A Correx board is sometimes the smartest signage decision you'll make. Other times, the cost of replacing a cheap sign every few months outweighs what a more durable option would have cost from the start.
Low cost is usually the right call when:
- Testing a new concept: if you're trialling a pop-up in Trinity Leeds or a temporary stall at Kirkgate Market, affordable signage lets you brand the space professionally
- Running seasonal promotions: vinyl banners and window graphics are easy to install, easy to remove and cost-effective to reuse next season
- Testing your messaging: use low-cost signs to trial different calls to action or QR codes before committing to a permanent installation
- Event wayfinding: for school fairs, open days and charity events, durable Correx directional signs or printed banners are a go-to option
When it's worth investing in something more permanent:
High-footfall main shopfronts: your primary shop sign is often a customer's first interaction with your brand. Budget materials can warp and fade, which leaves a bad impression. For a permanent Leeds high-street presence, it’s worth investing in a finish for your signs that builds long-term trust
Long-term outdoor exposure: if a sign needs to face West Yorkshire wind and rain for more than a couple of years, constant replacements often cost more than a single robust metal sign would have done
High-end brand positioning: if you're a luxury boutique, a law firm or a premium restaurant, temporary-looking materials on your main frontage can quietly signal the wrong thing to customers and clients
We’re here to offer our expertise as well as signs, so if a low-cost option won't survive the winter on a windy Leeds hillside, we'll always tell you.
Getting more value from a limited signage budget

Choose the right material first time
Some materials are excellent indoors but warp in damp storage or high-humidity areas. A small conversation before ordering can save a significant replacement cost later. Just let us know where the sign is going.
Design with reuse in mind
Keep dates and specific offers off your main banners and boards where possible. Put your budget into quality brand graphics and use smaller, cheaper add-ons for changeable prices or seasonal messaging.
Try a hybrid approach
Invest in one strong permanent element, like a quality fascia sign or built-up letters, and use lower-cost window graphics or A-boards around it to promote current offers. You get a high-end look where it matters while keeping the rest of your display flexible.
Factor in installation
If you pay a professional to install a budget vinyl that peels after six months, you pay for labour and time twice. Total cost, not just materials, is what matters.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest type of sign?
Correx boards and vinyl banners are typically the most affordable. They're lightweight, quick to produce and suited to short-term or outdoor use. For indoor displays, Foamex offers a slightly higher-quality finish at a similar price point.
Are banners cheaper than rigid signs?
Generally, yes. Banners are also easier to store and reuse, which improves their value over time. Rigid signs like Foamex or aluminium composite cost more upfront but last longer, especially for permanent or semi-permanent indoor installs.
How long do vinyl signs last?
It depends on which vinyl you're using. PVC banner material lasts 1–3 years in an exposed outdoor spot, longer if it's sheltered. Self-adhesive vinyl (window graphics, wall graphics) lasts 5–8 years outdoors; solid colour lasts longer than printed. Short-term promotional vinyl is made to come off cleanly after a few months. Tell us where it's going and we'll point you at the right grade.
