Multi-Phase Office Signage Project for CIBSE: Transforming a London Headquarters

Author: FASTSIGNS® Hammersmith

Large organisations rarely complete a workplace transformation in a single stage. As their spaces evolve, so do their branding, navigation and communication requirements. At FASTSIGNS® Hammersmith, we specialise in supporting businesses throughout that journey, delivering signage solutions that remain consistent from the first installation through to the final finishing touches.

A great example is our recent collaboration with the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), one of the world’s leading professional bodies for building services engineering. You can learn more about their work at https://www.cibse.org.

Working closely with the CIBSE team over several months, we delivered a comprehensive signage programme for their London headquarters. Rather than supplying one standalone product, this project involved multiple phases including premium internal signage, illuminated reception branding, external window graphics and a complete wayfinding system. Each stage was carefully designed to complement the previous installations, creating a modern, professional environment that enhances both the visitor experience and the workplace itself.

Every successful office signage project begins with understanding how people use the building. Visitors need to feel confident they’ve arrived at the right place before they even step inside, while staff and members benefit from clear navigation once they’re inside. Equally important is ensuring every sign reflects the organisation’s identity through consistent colours, materials and design.

The first phase focused on creating a striking visual impact within the building. CIBSE wanted reception signage that reflected the prestige of the organisation while maintaining a clean, contemporary appearance. Working from detailed specifications, our team manufactured a bespoke illuminated stainless steel tray sign featuring precision-cut lettering, opal acrylic inlays and energy-efficient LED illumination.

The brushed stainless steel finish provides a timeless appearance, while the illuminated blue branding creates a welcoming focal point for visitors entering the headquarters. Alongside the reception feature, we also produced an illuminated Skills Hub sign, projecting signs and engraved stainless steel plaques, ensuring that every element shared the same premium finish and consistent branding throughout the building.

Projects like this demonstrate why bespoke office signage offers far greater value than off-the-shelf alternatives. Every reception area is different, every brand has its own identity and every workplace presents unique architectural challenges. By manufacturing each sign specifically for its location, we were able to achieve a seamless integration with CIBSE’s interior design while delivering the durability expected from a busy London office.

As the project progressed, attention turned to the building’s exterior. The goal was to improve visibility while maintaining privacy for occupants inside the offices.

Our solution combined frosted window vinyl with carefully produced corporate branding, transforming the glazing into an attractive extension of the organisation’s visual identity. Existing graphics were professionally removed before new frosted vinyl, blue logos and white lettering were applied to the external face of the glazing. The result provides privacy without sacrificing natural light while creating a polished, highly professional appearance from street level.

Window graphics continue to be one of the most versatile signage solutions available for commercial buildings. They maximise existing glass surfaces, improve privacy, reinforce corporate branding and often eliminate the need for more expensive structural alterations. For organisations based in central London, where first impressions matter and glass-fronted buildings are increasingly common, professionally designed window vinyl offers an effective way to enhance both aesthetics and functionality.

The final phase of the project centred on helping people navigate the building more efficiently. Even the most attractive workplace can become frustrating if visitors struggle to find meeting rooms, training facilities or key departments. Clear wayfinding signage improves accessibility, creates a more welcoming environment and reduces interruptions for staff who would otherwise be repeatedly giving directions.

For CIBSE, we manufactured a suite of brushed silver aluminium composite wayfinding signs with direct printed graphics and concealed French cleat fixings that create an elegant floating appearance on internal walls. Nine individual signs were produced, providing consistent navigation throughout the headquarters while matching the premium materials already used across the building.

Although each installation formed part of a larger programme, every stage required careful planning and coordination. Materials, colours, typography and installation methods all needed to remain consistent despite being delivered over different phases. This is where experienced project management becomes invaluable. Our team worked closely with CIBSE throughout the process, ensuring every new element integrated perfectly with previous installations while maintaining the highest standards of manufacture and installation.

Many organisations assume signage is simply about displaying a logo or identifying a room, but a well-planned signage strategy contributes much more. It strengthens brand identity, improves customer confidence, enhances employee experience and helps buildings operate more efficiently. Whether visitors are arriving for a meeting, attending a training session or exploring the headquarters for the first time, professional signage creates reassurance and clarity from the moment they arrive.

At FASTSIGNS Hammersmith, we regularly support businesses across London with projects that extend far beyond individual signs. From complete office rebrands and headquarters relocations to phased refurbishment programmes, we provide design consultation, manufacturing, installation and ongoing project management under one roof. This integrated approach ensures every stage is delivered efficiently while maintaining consistent quality and branding.

The CIBSE project perfectly demonstrates what can be achieved when signage is considered as part of a wider workplace strategy rather than a collection of separate products. By combining illuminated feature signage, bespoke internal branding, privacy-enhancing window graphics and a comprehensive wayfinding system, we helped create a headquarters that is both visually impressive and highly functional.

If your organisation is planning an office refurbishment, relocating to new premises or looking to improve the visitor experience through professional signage, our experienced team would be delighted to help. We can manage projects of every size, from individual reception signs to complete multi-phase workplace transformations across London and the South East.
