Airport Inn
High-Altitude Signage Overhaul Enhances Safety and Visibility at Airport Inn

The Challenge
For 25 years, the massive hotel signage at Airport Inn at London Gatwick Airport, stood as a landmark to travellers, but those years led to significant wear and tear, particularly from harsh weather. Located on a high-traffic dual carriageway, a mile from the airport, the compromised signage posed a potential hazard to both drivers and pedestrians alike. The client needed an urgent, professional solution, that would mitigate safety risks, while also strengthening and modernising their brand presence.

The Solution
Recognising the project's scale, FASTSIGNS® Crawley applied a rigorous project management framework, partnering with Titchfield Group, to combine expert design with specialised installation. Following a meticulous site survey, specialised abseiling crews utilised high-level rope access to reach restricted roof areas where traditional machinery failed. This strategic approach ensured the safe, precise, removal of the legacy signage despite the hazardous heights and harsh winter conditions.

To ensure a flawless design over a large surface area, FASTSIGNS designed high-performance flexface signage, allowing for a seamless, tensioned finish without the need for joints. Durability was a top priority, so weather-resistant materials were selected to withstand the harsher seasons, without compromising the colour and visibility of the signage. Despite a grueling bad weather schedule, the installation team worked to ensure the massive signage was securely tensioned and positioned perfectly, completing the transformation just in time for the Christmas Eve deadline.
The Result
The Airport Inn was transformed with a fresh, modern, flexface sign that reinforced its brand identity. The new signage serves as a beacon for travellers at all times, while providing the peace of mind that comes with professional signage. The customer was so impressed by the seamless execution, under such harsh conditions, that they have appointed FASTSIGNS as a preferred supplier for their central purchasing team’s nationwide hotel refurbishments.
